THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS (!!)

I, Jon Stewart, hate Christmas … .”

Linking to clips of Bill O’Reilly’s show is sort of like linking to video of a train wreck. It’s hard not to look, just for the shock value. It’s so twisted, destructive, and horrible! And so completely useless. I’m reluctant to grant Bill O’Reilly the degree of respect afforded by acknowledgement of existence of any sort whatsoever: he doesn’t deserve the attention. I get annoyed at Media Matters for devoting so much bandwidth to him. Aren’t there more important things they could be covering?

But I guess I don’t mind linking to Jon Stewart clips about Bill O’Reilly. They’re just plain funny.

i *so* do not understand this whole hubbub. i don’t want to believe it’s the conservatives’ way of trying to get back on the offensive after the past several months; if so, it just looks pathetic. surely the camp of Karl Rove can do better!

if they’re serious about bringing back the spirit of Christmas, they should devote their time this month to community service, reflection and worshipful celebration. if they must rant, they should rant against the ad campaigns that turn the holiday into a mere excuse for running up credit cards. (though i suppose that kind of stance would be anti-business…hmmm…no good…) but to clog the airwaves with an argument over semantics is just silly. which means the Daily Show is totally in its element with this one. :)

And a Very Happy Chicken to you, good sir.

I don’t know if it’s anything as organized as a conservative effort to regain the offensive. I think it’s just an opportunity to complain about being victimized by the Evil Liberal Establishment, and some people like to feel victimized. Not all people, mind you, and not all conservatives, but those conservatives who do … do.

I agree completely about “bringing back the spirit of Christmas:” it has nothing to do with the words you use or the decorations you put up. A lot of the screeching has focused on retailers modifying their marketing to be inclusive towards non-Christians. First of all, it makes good business sense, so a great big “WTF?” to the conservatives boycotting Target. But also, if that’s what’s motivating all the hubbub, apparently the spirit of Christmas is indivisible from consumerism.

Which is pretty much spot on, of course. Yay America.
