In the old days, my work involved sitting in front of a computer at a desk all day and I would get desperate for exercise, so I’d jog around the halls of my office building in perpetually-fogged-in Daly City. Maybe run up and down the concrete stairwells.

These days my work involves sitting in front of a laptop at cafés all day and I get desperate for exercise, so I take 30 minutes on a fall afternoon and bike up Boulder canyon a little ways.

commuted sentence

I was summoned to Boulder County jury duty today. I am obviously living a blessed life because (a) the courthouse is a three-minute bike ride away from home, (b) I was headed for a three-day criminal trial but they got a continuance, (c) so I was dismissed a little before 10 am, (d) my place of work (ie, the cafés of downtown) is a three-minute bike ride away from the courthouse, and so (e), I only lost an hour or so of work time and can’t be called for jury duty again for a year.

I was on one level eager and willing to fulfill my civic obligations. It’s never going to be a convenient time, but now seems particularly inconvenient.

Seriously. Jon Stewart is my hero.

(From Wikipedia: A male Bodhisattva, [Manjusri] is depicted wielding a flaming sword in his right hand, representing his realisation of wisdom which cuts through ignorance and wrong views.)
