journalists who ask questions

Sunday, August 6th, 2006

The videos on this page are worth watching.* Regardless of one’s opinion of Israel, the page’s author is quite right that journalism in the US is pablum, comparatively. (via del.icio.us/popular.)

* One caveat: the author decries Israeli propaganda, but the third video strikes me as simple anti-Israeli propaganda. You know, I’d be sympathetic to its message, but its presentation is blatantly meant to stoke emotions, which only makes me apt to question its message. Sigh.

I did the visited states thing:

A lot of that is just “travelled through” and not “had a destination in.” The map should have a different color for that:

Crap, I forgot Minnesota. (Prairie-Home-Companion-esque joke left as exercise for the reader.)

My visited countries map is depressingly gray:

And I get Canada only because I flew through Vancouver on the way to China. But I never left the international terminal, so I’m not sure I was legally in Canada at all.

O, Canada …

*shrug*

A visual representation of how your tax dollars are spent: Death and Taxes. The full graphic is huge, but worth exploring.

I consider myself a highly patriotic guy and I understand how people can get worked up over the flag being burned. I love my flag. But symbols are personal things, and everyone is free to interpret them however they see fit. For me, a flag that I’m NOT allowed to burn is a symbol that the government is too intrusive in my life. And it’s an insult to anyone who died to defend freedom. But that’s just me. You might prefer your symbols of freedom to have as many restrictions as possible.
